The Oregon Poison Center is a 24-hour emergency response center providing information to effectively triage and assist in management of patients experiencing a poisoning or toxic exposure. The Oregon Poison center serves the public as well as health care providers throughout Oregon, Alaska and Guam. The center serves patients of all age groups.
Work Schedule, Hours, FTE, Salary Range
The Registered Nurses in the Oregon Poison Center maintain responsibility for answering the emergency phone lines of the poison center. Primary responsibility includes patient assessment, provision of treatment recommendations and facilitating appropriate referral to a health care facility if necessary. Ongoing patient evaluation and follow up are essential components of the duties of this position.
The staff of the Oregon Poison Center utilizes a collaborative practice model as a framework for care provision. The policies and procedures in the center are consistent with a planned system through which members of the medical and nursing professions, together, and with health care disciplines in other health care facilities work to assure consistent, quality patient care for victims of poisoning and toxic exposures. Inherent in this framework are shared clients, collegiality, shared accountability and joint decision-making. Mutual trust and respect are essential to the collaborative practice model environment.
Functions/Duties of Position
This position is subject to a collective bargaining agreement with the Oregon Nurses Association (ONA)
.70 FTE; Schedule: Evening shift and every other weekend. Salary based on ONA contract. Location: This position is located at on the Marquam Hill campus.
Job Requirements
REQUIRED:
Current, unencumbered Oregon State RN license.
BLS certification issued by the American Heart Association or the Military Training Network.
External applicants: BSN required.
Current OHSU employees: Depending on unit need, internal candidates who are a Diploma RN or who have an Associate's degree in Nursing will be considered. BSN preferred.
Must have graduated from a Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) accredited program, or National League for Nursing (NLN) accredited program for nurse educator roles.
Minimum 2 years previous clinical experience in critical care, emergency medicine, high acuity pediatrics or centralized nurse triage call center.
Demonstrated experience and excellent skills in telephone triage and communication.
Skills in EKG interpretation, ABG interpretation and interpretation of chemistry profile.
Competency in Computer skills-keyboarding, utilization of MS Word programs.
Must take national certification exam for specialist in poison information upon eligibility (completion of 2,000 work hours and management of 2,000 human exposure cases).
Failure to pass exam upon 3rd period of eligibility will result in termination of SPI position consistent with national poison center accreditation standards and regulations, and possible termination of employment with OHSU.
PREFERRED:
Experience in toxicology preferred.
Previous poison center experience preferred.
RN Certified Specialist in Poison Information (RN CSPI) preferred.
Additional Details
ORIENTATION:
8 to 10 weeks.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
Variable work schedule as necessitated by staffing needs of a 24/7 specialized emergency service.
General office setting with shared computer workstations, dual monitors and a variety of essential electronic equipment within the room.
Work environment necessitates multiple simultaneous conversations by others within the work setting creating background noise.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS & EQUIPMENT USAGE:
Ability to speak and listening on telephone set and sit at computer workstation throughout shift.
Ability to document critical patient information in electronic medical record while conversing with callers.
Fluency in English language, including medical terminology.
Ability to hear and understand English speaking callers- with variety of accents.
Ability to lift and carry up to 20 lbs.
Workstations in the department are used by all staff, necessitating agility in turning, twisting and moving to obtain necessary resources and set up work station to accommodate individual needs during work shift.
