Functions/Duties of Position
This position supports the OHSU Department of Molecular & Medical Genetics and the Knight Cardiovascular Institute as a full time clinical genetic counselor specializing adult genetics, primarily cardiogenetics and cancer genetics. The counselor will participate in overall coordination of care including intake, assessment, counseling, test coordination, and follow-up. Our genetic counselors are involved in the multidisciplinary clinics, working in partnership with cardiologists, medical geneticists, nurse practitioners, and researchers. In addition to direct patient care, our clinical genetic counselors serve a primary role in education to medical trainees, genetic counseling students and other health care providers. Participation in research and publication is also encouraged.
Approximately half of this position will be focused on the coordination of clinical trials, duties to include: Planning, implementation, operation and evaluation of all regulatory and patient-care aspects of clinical research projects. Independent performance of assignments of significant complexity such as facilitating subject entry into research projects by applying in depth knowledge of protocol inclusion/exclusion criteria; identifying qualifying subjects through medical history review and patient/parent/guardian interview; consenting subjects/parents/guardians; and coordinating study visits according to a specific protocol. Work collaboratively with nursing, dietary and physician staff, as well as with other study coordinators, in the care of the research subject, in scheduling study visits; and in protocol coordination and management. Develop and/or update a subject database as well as help represent the investigator at on-site monitor/audit visits as needed. The position will be expected to support and perform IRB protocol submissions. Thus, knowledge of FDA, DHHS and other agency guidelines that govern clinical research is necessary. Budgetary work will be minimal, but knowledge of the research budgetary process is essential to understanding the overall submission process.
Job Requirements
Qualified candidates will have a Master''s degree in Human Genetics/Genetic Counseling from an ABGC accredited training program and will be Board Certified or an Active Candidate through the ABMG or ABGC.
