The Laboratory Animal Technician 3 provides care and husbandry for laboratory research animals maintained at the Oregon National Primate Research Center (ONPRC); performs technical procedures as required for research on a variety of laboratory research animals, and provides leadership and oversight to a group of animal technicians to ensure compliance with animal welfare regulatory requirements; coordinate work assignments to meet investigator and clinical veterinarian needs, overseeing timely and effective completion of tasks assigned, and provides instruction and training to Veterinary Research/Health Technicians, Laboratory Animal Technicians, and research staff, in a professional manner and with a service-oriented attitude.
Key
Responsibilities:
Coordinates assignments of animal technicians assigned to work area; provides training for technicians and research staff, reports employee performance to supervisor/manager, assures that assignments are completed timely and correctly; maintain liaisons with veterinary and research staff, investigators, other DAR units, and administrative and service units at ONPRC.
Oversees care of and cares for animal population under specialized research projects; administer medications and treatments under the supervision of the veterinary staff; perform animal health management procedures, including animal treatment and diagnostic procedures.
Oversees and performs animal husbandry procedures including but not limited to: feed and water animals; clean and sanitize animal primary housing, shelters, cages(sweep, mop, scrub, wash and disinfect floors, walls, ceilings, sinks and other equipment); observe animal health observations; reports physical or behavioral abnormalities promptly following DAR operational procedures.
Monitor the environment in animal areas; inspect caging, equipment, floors, walls, etc, for needed repairs and safety hazards, or potential hazards to research animals and/or experimental protocols.
Maintain complete and appropriate records as required by Federal and State regulations and DAR policies and guidelines.
Develop and write Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) for approval of Veterinary executive staff.
Job Requirements
Required:
High School Diploma or GED.
Five years of experience in the care of experimental animals in a research setting and certification by the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science at the Laboratory Animal Technologist level or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
In addition to a LAT certification and the five years experience listed above, a license as a registered Veterinary Technician is considered to be equivalent to the LATG certification.
Professional and service-oriented attitude; excellent interpersonal and organizational skills.
A valid Driver's License and the ability to drive DAR/ONPRC vehicles on and off campus.
Will be required to complete an FBI security risk assessment.
Preferred:
Bachelor's degree in science, preferably in related field such as Animal Sciences, Biology, Physiology, etc.
Three months of experience with IRIS (Integrated Research Information Sources), which maintains copious amounts of information related to primate research and serves as a clinical and resource management system.
Demonstrated prior experience in a leadership role highly preferred.
