Functions/Duties of Position
A postdoctoral position is available in the lab of Julie Saugstad, which is focused on examining the role of non-coding RNAs in ischemic stroke and Alzheimer's Disease.
The selected candidate will be supported by NIH funding to carry out studies to (1) examine microRNAs as effectors of cell death in ischemic brain injury, and (2) examine microRNAs in human cerebrospinal fluid as biomarkers for early detection of Alzheimer's Disease. The candidate will utilize their expertise to perform quantitative PCR and microRNA arrays, molecular cloning, gel electrophoresis and immunoblot analysis. The candidate will be expected to provide an intellectual component to these projects, to pursue grant opportunities where applicable, and to contribute to the production of manuscripts in collaboration with the PI.
The Department of Anesthesiology & Perioperative Medicine offers a diverse and extensive research program utilizing animal surgery, advanced imaging technologies, and molecular techniques. Our research mission is focused on identifying potential therapies in the treatment of focal ischemic stroke, as well as for age-related cognitive impairment, sub-arachnoid hemorrhage, and global cerebral ischemia.
Job Requirements
Required:
PhD in Neuroscience or related fields (Molecular/Cell Biology, Biochemistry).
Extensive experience with molecular biology and biochemistry methods including isolation of RNA; quantification of RNAs by qRT-PCR, digital PCR, RNA blot, and in situ hybridization; protein isolation and quantification.
Experience in statistics, effective skills in grant and publication generation.
Preferred:
Experience in RNA biology and the field of non-coding RNAs and microRNAs on gene expression.
Good organizational and communication skills, attention to detail, ability to work independently.
