Position Details The Student Transportation Department is responsible for the safe and professional transport of our special education students on school buses and passenger vehicles.

The Fleet Maintenance Manager leads the Maintenance Team which services and repairs all our propane, gasoline, and electric fleet.
The ideal candidate is a savvy leader that can navigate competing priorities, keep up-to-date with program requirements, and is keen on process improvement to continually provide safe vehicles for the transport of students.
BASIC FUNCTION Manages fleet maintenance operations within the Student Transportation Department; and performs a variety of technical tasks relative to assigned are of responsibility to maintain efficient, safe and cost effective transportation maintenance services.

This summary provides examples of typical tasks performed in this classification.
Plan, prioritize, assign, supervise and review the work of staff involved in equipment maintenance.
Supervise and assign work, tools, and equipment to appropriate shop employees.
Maintain radio contact with vehicle and equipment operators in the field and dispatches equipment and personnel to handle emergencies.
Manage staff selection process; work with employees to correct deficiencies; implement discipline procedures; Identify training requirements for improving productivity and quality; train shop personnel and arrange employee training as appropriate.
Recommend and assist in the implementation of goals and objectives; established schedules and methods for equipment maintenance program; implement policies and procedures.
Evaluate operations and activities of assigned responsibilities; recommend improvements and modifications; prepare various reports on operations and activities.
Review shop operating cost and procedures; recommend and implement improved procedures and methods.
Review service requests; diagnose mechanical and electrical system problems; determine appropriate repair action; prepare cost estimate; schedule and authorize work orders.
Coordinate the repair of equipment and warranty compliance with commercial vendors; monitor scheduled equipment maintenance and repair to ensure compliance with warranties and applicable District purchasing policies.
Maintain effective communication and coordinate maintenance and service scheduling with equipment operators and department representatives.
Maintain accurate and complete records, as well as implement changes in the Preventative Maintenance Program through a computerized vehicle management information system, including shop labor, vehicle repair descriptions and service histories.
Inspect work for quality control and review actual performance to labor standards.
Participate in budget preparation and administration; prepare cost estimate for budget recommendations; submit justifications for requests; monitor and control expenditures.
Review Fleet Management operations to ensure safety of Fleet personnel, customers and the public; plan, schedule and conduct safety meetings.
Fleet liaison to the public; provide information; investigate and answer complaints; recommend corrective action to resolve complaints.
Researches and makes recommendations for purchasing and sales of student transportation vehicles:
busses, vans, and cars.
Other duties as assigned.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE Equivalent to an Associate of Arts degree from an accredited trade school in auto and diesel mechanics or a related field, three (3) years fleet maintenance experience and two (2) years of supervisory experience OR three (3) years of fleet maintenance experience, plus five (5) years of supervisory experience OR 7 (seven) years of experience in automotive and equipment repair and maintenance, knowledge of fleet maintenance, plus five (5) years related supervisory experience.
Any other combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities may be considered.
Special Requirements:
Some positions in this classification may require the use of a personal automobile and possession of a valid Class C Oregon driver's license.

Primary functions require sufficient physical ability and mobility to work in an office setting; dexterity of hands and fingers to operate a computer keyboard and other office equipment; sitting or standing for extended periods of time; kneeling, bending at the waist, reaching overhead, above the shoulders and horizontally to retrieve and store files and supplies; lifting, pushing, pulling and carrying office equipment, supplies and materials weighing up to 40 pounds; repetitive hand movement and fine coordination to use a computer keyboard; hearing and speaking to exchange information in person or on the telephone; seeing to read, prepare and assure the accuracy of documents.
