This position serves as a Legal Instruments Examiner, responsible for providing administrative support in the areas of collecting payments for user fees charged by the Coast Guard for various merchant mariner credentialing functions and licensing and documentation of merchant mariners. Being a Coast Guard civilian makes you a valuable member of the Coast Guard team. Typical work assignments include:
Receiving, safeguarding, accounting, verifying, and forwarding Mariner Credentialing Program collections in accordance with prescribed collection policies and procedures. Receiving payments from members of the public and marine industry by cash, check, credit card, and other authorized financial instrument such as online payments. Ensuring payments are reflected on the proper documents and recorded in the Merchant Mariner Licensing and Documentation (MMLD) database. Maintaining, balancing, and reconciling collection records; and reviewing all documents relating to fee payments in order to verify the accuracy of financial data and appropriate entries. Analyzing accounting data and preparing reports as directed by the supervisor. AT THE GS-04 LEVEL:
Applicant must have at least one year of general experience. General experience is experience that has equipped you with the particular ability, skill, and knowledge to successfully perform the duties of this position and is typically in or related to this line of work. Examples of general experience includes responding to in-person customer inquiries and requests for assistance; providing remote assistance (e.g., via telephone, email, or mail) to customers; establishing priorities to meet deadlines. OR Two years of education above high school.OR AT THE GS-05 LEVEL:
Applicant must have at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to GS-04 level in the federal service. Specialized experience is experience that has equipped you with particular ability, skills and knowledge to successfully perform the duties of this position and is typical in or related to this line of work. Examples of specialized experience includes:
review applications, respond to inquiries both oral and written received from the public and/or governmental agencies, draft routine correspondence for signature, draft merchant mariner credentials. COMBINATION OF EDUCATION AND

The fraudster will send a check to the victim who has accepted a job. The check can be for multiple reasons such as signing bonus, supplies, etc. The victim will be instructed to deposit the check and use the money for any of these reasons and then instructed to send the remaining funds to the fraudster. The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
